Bellydancing
Bellydancing
as a name for this beautiful dance form started in France. In Middle Eastern
countries, the dance is called a variety of names. In Greece, belly dance
is called "shifte telli", while in Turkey, it is knows as "rakkase."
In Egypt, belly dancing is known as "raks sharki". In general,
this Mid Eastern dance form is called "oriental danse."
For
generations, bellydance has been performed by women, men and children
throughout the Middle East as it is still enjoyed today.
Bellydance
is inseparable from Mideastern music and rhythms. Although modern belly
dancing music has been influenced by Western musicians, the original Middle
Eastern sounds continue to thrive.
Dancers
may use finger cymbals or "zills" to accompany musicians or
as a solo. Finger cymbals were found to be used as early as 200 BC. Dancers
also use swords, veils, lamps, and live snakes to enhance their performance.
Bellydancers who perform receive tips from audience members who place
bills into the dancer's costume or throw money on the stage. You can enjoy
the dance and the tipping at many Middle Eastern restaurants.
