Bellydancing

Bellydancing as a name for this beautiful dance form started in France. In Middle Eastern countries, the dance is called a variety of names. In Greece, belly dance is called "shifte telli", while in Turkey, it is knows as "rakkase." In Egypt, belly dancing is known as "raks sharki". In general, this Mid Eastern dance form is called "oriental danse."

Bellydance is inseparable from Mideastern music and rhythms. Although modern belly dancing music has been influenced by Western musicians, the original Middle Eastern sounds continue to thrive.

belly danceDancers may use finger cymbals or "zills" to accompany musicians or as a solo. Finger cymbals were found to be used as early as 200 BC. Dancers also use swords, veils, lamps, and live snakes to enhance their performance. Bellydancers who perform receive tips from audience members who place bills into the dancer's costume or throw money on the stage.
